Description

Product Description

Without fresh, all-natural winter gardening in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries people would have starved to death. The good news is that feeding your family fresh food from your own backyard garden all winter long is far easier and less time-consuming than you might imagine. And you won''t find better-tasting food at any price!

Review

I love this book, very thorough and easy to understand directions on how to start a winter garden, especially in a high-desert environment like Utah. I''ve found Caleb ''s advice to be invaluable. I have my first ever winter garden started this year, so we''ll see how good I am at putting his instructions to use. :) --Amazon

I love every page. This is a great guide to overcoming the difficulties of winter gardening. I''m really glad that I got it and now I can''t put it down. It''s a good thing that it showed up right away after I ordered it. I''m quite satisfied with this purchase and seller. --Amazon

I love this book, it has plenty of practical advice and know how. I do feel that I could grow a successful winter garden after having read the book. --Amazon

Backyard Winter Gardening is a relatively quick read that includes many useful tips to prolong garden growth into the dead of winter. Some of this involves cold frames and hot frames, but there are also tips how to keep root crops in the ground until they are needed. There is also some useful information on partially underground greenhouses. The pictures are high quality, and there are regular historical excerpts on how people gardened over a hundred years ago.

I did have two issues with the book. The first one is that the author gave dates for planting that didn''t seem to make sense, like planting seeds in early August rather than late July because he said it''s cooler then. The author lives at a high elevation and in a dry environment, so his winters are longer, colder and windier than most other places. This makes some of the planting dates less useful than they could be. The second issue is the author''s heavy use of hot frames, which warms beds with large quantities of decomposing manure. This would require as much as a cubic yard of manure for a single bed of cantaloupes. This is no problem for the author since he has two cows, a horse, chickens and rabbits. For people without livestock this isn''t a viable option. While you could use grass clippings and vegetable scraps instead of manure, even then it''s going to require too many cubic feet (or yards) to make it practical.

Despite these issues, I found the book useful and interesting, and I intend to try a few of the ideas.

Going into my 2nd winter garden season, and my 10th 3 season garden, I still consider myself a student, even though I''m the go-to in my friend group for self sufficiency and gardening. I bought this to see if it''s something I can recommend to get people into winter growing instead of me having to spell everything out for the forever skeptics.
I can hands down say this is my new favorite recommendation. If I could afford to, I''d keep multiple copies on hand to give out to my friends who I know are serious about growing and putting in the work. Word for word everything I tell people is in this book, and more. Thank you for such a resource!

Growing tomatoes in the snow without electricity or heat? Yep Caleb will show you how he does it. Learning so much from Caleb in this book and a his other titles too. He is a rare find, the real old fashioned guy passing on the wisdom and knowledge of his farming pioneer grandparents. A very real person living the life he is teaching, he even takes his classes home with him when they are over for hands on view & experience. In person I''ve found him unpretentious and honest as the summer day is long, a passionate gardener that wants to help everyone too succeed as well!

bought this as a gift, the recipient was very happy. I think, to be fair, for the more utilitarian gardener, a lot of this information could be gotten for free and in a much more condensed format (which is what I would have done, myself). However, as a gift it was really nice, beautiful illustrations and a nice organization, I would read this if it were on a coffee table. :-)

I would give this book 5 stars if it weren’t for one thing. I bought the kindle version and the contents section is blank. I like being able to click on links in the contents section and jumping right to the info I’m looking for. Other than that, whole wealth of information on winter gardening in this book. I particularly like all the unique varieties of vegetables the author recommends growing.

Couldn''t put the book down from the moment it arrived.. the only criticism I have that stopped it from getting 5 stars is that I''m going to be constantly referring to this book and the option of a hard back copy for durability would have been amazing Otherwise great !

Great service, book is good. Could be a better book about winter gardening. Was hoping to see detailed examples, more pictures and diagrams. Read more like a personal diary. Book is 2/5 in my own view on winter gardening.
